Tailing someone, thought Stella, was harder than it sounded. As it was Sunday, they had a free afternoon. The boys and girls were not meant to mix but Stella saw Rose and Alicia heading to the woods with Carrington and Meek. Some of the other boys were playing cricket on the top field, and Moira and Irene went to join in. Stella and Letitia, watching from a first-floor window, saw Moira hit the ball with her usual power. The fielders scurried into the trees to retrieve it.

‘She’ll be on the St Wilfred’s cricket team soon,’ said Letitia.

‘But where’s Mr Hoffman?’ said Stella. ‘Shouldn’t he be umpiring or something?’

Normally, she would have been worried about following a teacher. She would have protested to Justice that teachers were trustworthy people, that they wouldn’t be spies or involved in a crime. Justice, of course, thought everyone was a possible suspect. That was one of the things that made her a rather alarming best friend. But, today, Stella was determined to do Justice justice. She knew what Justice’s dad meant to her: she often said that he was the only person she had in the world. ‘You’ve got me and my family,’ Stella always replied, but she knew it wasn’t the same. Stella had her mum and her dad, all her brothers and sisters. She had so many people and look how worried she was about Josh joining the army. What if Josh was all she had and then he went missing?

Stella squared her shoulders. ‘We have to find him,’ she said. ‘Let’s look in the boys’ dormitories, then go up to his room in the attic.’

The boys’ dormitories were deserted and very tidy. The beds looked as if the sheets and blankets had been straightened by a ruler.

‘I bet Major Hammond insists on everything being just so,’ said Stella. ‘He’s even worse than Matron.’

‘Where is the Mad Major today?’ said Letitia.

‘Apparently he went out in his car,’ said Stella. ‘Rose saw him leaving. You know he’s got that little red sports car.’

‘Let’s hope he doesn’t crash into Dorothy,’ said Letitia.

They walked to the end of the corridor. The last room, the one where Stella and Justice had heard the wireless playing, was locked.

‘Why’s it locked?’ said Letitia. ‘There must be some mystery. If only we could get a spare key.’

‘Hutchins has copies of all the keys,’ said Stella, who’d once stolen them to save her friends.

‘Let’s see if we can sneak into his room later,’ said Letitia. Stella’s heart sank at the thought of more rule-breaking but she agreed. Anything to help Justice.

They climbed the stairs to the second floor. Matron’s wireless was playing but there was no other sound as they tiptoed to the attic stairs. They could hear the sixth formers in their common room but there was no sound from Mr Hoffman’s room. Letitia tried the door. Locked.

They looked at each other, frustrated.

‘Shall we search the grounds?’ said Stella.

‘Let’s go to the common room,’ said Letitia. ‘That’ll give us a vantage point.
